Three out of the five systematic reviews observed participants over an extended period of time (Ostacher, Perlis, Roy, Nierenberg, Calabrese, Stange, Salloum, Sachs, 2010), (Kilbourne, Biswas, Pirraglia, Sajatovic, Williford, Bauer, 2009), (Felicia, Derek, Satre, Weisner, 2006). Sample sizes for the participants being observed ranged from hundreds to several thousand. The other two systematic reviews, reviewed existing studies (Miklowitz, 2008), (Drake, ONeal, Wallach, 2008). All five systematic reviews concluded that, the different psychotherapy techniques decrease mental health symptoms, increases engagement, and modestly decrease substance use (Ostacher, Perlis, Roy, Nierenberg, Calabrese, Stange, Salloum, Sachs, 2010), (Kilbourne,†¦show more content†¦All eight studies were various in race, ethnicities, and genders. However, the most frequent demographic in all the studies was an adult male. The two case studies had very weak sample sizes (Jones, Barrowclough, Callott, Day, Earnshaw, Wilson, 2011), (Biseul, Icick, Seguin, Bellivier, Scott, 2017). Case studies are supposed to have small samples. However, observing less than fifteen participants in a study cannot give an accurate depiction of how effective a treatment is, because it makes it hard to replicate the treatment in other population demographics. All three experimental designs had strong sample sizes. Both the pilot and follow up study completed by (Weiss, Griffin, Kolodzie, Greenfield, 2007), (Weiss, Griffin, Greenfield, Najavits, Wyner, Soto, Hennen, 2000) had a strong sample size. The sample size in the pilot study was 45, and the sample size in the follow up study was 61. This is a strong sample size for experimental designs because it includes various population demographics that make it easier to replicate. The study written by (Smelson,Kalman Losonczy,line,Sambamoorthi,Hill,Ziedonis 2012;2010) had 102 participants that were gathered from an inpatient psychiatric unit.
